Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth removal is the most common application of Oral Surgery. Wisdom teeth usually start to come in during a persons late teens to early twenties. This is also the time when most patients get their wisdom teeth removed.

Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed?

When wisdom teeth come in they are usually what dentists call impacted teeth. This is when the mouth no longer has room left for these large molars. As implacted teeth come into the mouth they can cause the jaw and teeth to become unaligned. Impacted teeth can also cause the teeth to get trapped under the gum tissue and create bleeding, swelling and pain. This can lead to further complications and possibly even life threatening infections later in adult life. The best thing to do when you can feel your wisdom teeth coming in is to talk to your dentist. The sooner you get them taken care of the less complications will arise.

Can other teeth become impacted?
Yes. Other teeth can become impacted but it is rare as opposed to impacted wisdom teeth. Canines and premolars are the other teeth that can become impacted.
